Pssst has been banned

Pssst has been banned following discussion amongst the founders/admins. There were differing views as to how to approach the situation, and in the end I was the one who pressed the ban button. The following is a list of reasons - in no particular order even though numbered - as to why I did that. Other founders/admins might voice their own potentially differing views in this thread.

Firstly, as many would know, Pssst has a long history of misbehaving on and trolling forums under various usernames, including as "Waller Joel" and as "MU!!". It seems fair to say that he is notorious for it. He has been banned from several forums, including Skeptiko in both of its incarnations as well as AfterLifeForums.com. We know from Skeptiko admins and users that after being banned, he sent some of the most abusive and scatalogical private messages to various users that the admins had ever seen. It seems fair to say, too, then, that his presence on Psience Quest was controversial from the start.

We initially took the view that his (mis)behaviour elsewhere need not affect the way he was received here. I now believe that view to be misguided. As another founder put it privately (though I may not be paraphrasing him all that well), we are part of a community of forums in which alternative, paranormal, and spiritual topics are discussed, and Pssst is one of several individuals who misbehaves across those forums: he deserves no special harbour or immunity in our little part of that forum community, and we owe it to the rest of the forum community not to turn a blind eye to his misbehaviour elsewhere.

Secondly, he has no respect for truth, evidence, or accountability, and thus he has largely[1] treated this forum - with its emphasis on the scientific investigation of psi and the paranormal - with contempt. When called on this, he responds with insults and nastiness.

Thirdly, his behaviour is especially offensive towards and alienating of women, such as his "joke" about one forum member not doing well enough to get into another's pants. When called on this by an admin (me), his response was to double down and essentially deny doing anything wrong.

He has also targeted without apparent cause Dreamsoap, and his recent utterly uncalled-for, out-of-the-blue sarcastic response - which I've deleted - to one of her very recent (and totally innocent) posts was the last straw for me. The fact that such a valuable contributor as Dreamsoap has been reluctant to post because of this miscreant is shameful. Too, his nasty and false recent comment in the "Contentious posts involving Pssst" thread about Dreamsoap and Mediochre's relationship further demonstrates his contempt for truth and respectfulness.

Fourthly, he privately showed contempt for Psience Quest and its admins - and me in particular - in what I am going to refer to as "the BillyWallace affair". There's no point in getting into the details of this publicly, but anybody interested should feel free to PM me and I'll explain.

He is contentious, combative, and disrespectful in general, deters people from joining and participating in our forum, has prompted several people to both privately and publicly ask for his removal - some of whom (including the admin of another forum) have expressed bafflement as to why he has been allowed to remain for so long - and in my very strong view has no place here.

[1] Admittedly, he has occasionally shared useful sourced information, such as his recent thread on Tom Campbell's Kickstarter campaign.

I am reminded of this post I stumbled upon while looking on the forum for old posts possibly connected to this arsehole:

http://psiencequest.net/forums/thread-im...ly-leuders

I now have to wonder... was Pssst the one behind all of the fake account? Or just most of them?

Is Pssst therefore Oliver D. Smith?

http://psiencequest.net/forums/thread-im...14#pid5814

In your reply to Pssst:

Quote:This fits with the fact that Oliver in his "Leuders" incarnation was very keen to pin all of his sock-puppets on you - not only did he claim publicly (in a post which Ian sensibly deleted) that you were the culprit, and not only did he PM moderators to this effect, but we have heard from non-admin members that he PMed them about this too.

So... that says a lot!

I'm pretty sure that Pssst and Oliver D. Smith are two separate individuals engaged in something of a troll war. Forensic evidence strongly links Oliver D. Smith to the fake accounts on this forum, and strongly suggests that Pssst has only ever had the one account behind which is a distinct personality from Ollie.

A brief summary of what is - I think fairly reliably - known about these two individuals is:

Oliver Smith is a young (early twenties?) UK citizen living with his parents in the city of Watford, in cahoots his brother, Daryl (and potentially (an)other brother(s)).

Pssst aka MU aka Waller Joel is a 60-something-year-old married guy from Florida, in the USA, who was interviewed by Roberta Grimes and who has been (apparently) confirmed as an attendee at various mediumship demonstrations, including those of Warren Caylor.

Laird, I know you mean well, but please don’t group women as delicate flowers who need protection above and beyond that given to men. Either his behaviour was offensive to some humans (regardless of gender); or he only targeted people of a certain gender (which I don’t believe was the case). Otherwise, the gender of his target should not affect the seriousness of his offence. If you expect a male to shrug off a lame joke, then the same consideration should be given to a female. Some individuals may more easily take offence than others, but please don’t presume this is a gender trait.

Fair call, Linda. I debated whether or not to put it in those terms. As you say, it's not helpful for women to be represented as delicate flowers in need of protection. On the other hand, I ended up putting it as I did for two reasons: firstly, there are very few women on this forum, and so any behaviour that might make women feel less welcome is significant. Secondly, because even if he might not have expressed it so much on this forum, the guy has been noted by others to have elsewhere been especially sexist (and homophobic) - and I thought this deserved pointing out. But I am sorry if I have caused offence. Please feel free to dress me down if this response is itself unsatisfactory to you.

I've always thought of Linda as a delicate flower. Looks like I need to buck my ideas up. Wink

He’s never bothered me. He’s been on ignore since pretty much day 1.  Smile

That sounds reasonable. I hadn't actually been reading his posts, although I did have the pleasure of his PM's on the mind/body Skeptiko forum.

I kind of get the drift but is it something you feel like elaborating on to any extent?
