Foreign Accent Syndrome

I was sure this topic (Foreign Accent Syndrome) must have been mentioned before somewhere on the forum but my searches have failed to find it.

Anyway, from BBC news,
Lincolnshire woman wakes up with Welsh accent
Quote:A Lincolnshire woman with a neurological condition has appealed for expert help after she woke up speaking in a Welsh accent six weeks ago.

Quote:"I've come away from work because I woke up six weeks ago with this accent

"At first, it was more like a strong German accent and now I believe it's a Welsh accent."

For those of you not familiar with British geography, Lincolnshire is a county in England on the East coast. Wales is one of the countries of the UK, it is on the Western side of the British mainland. Also an example of a Welsh accent many people here might have heard is that of Dr Penny Sartori.

This may well be related to the strange phenomenon where some mediums and channeling psychics early in their career have had a pronounced Irish brogue or other accent. An example I am personally acquainted with was channeling psychic medium Ron Scolastico. Early in his career when channeling his Guides (apparently speaking their words in their voice) he exhibited this strong Irish brogue; it slowly went away over the subsequent years.

I have looked into the actual evidence for this. There’s no proven cases of anyone speaking a new language never being taught to them before. For that reason I think there’s nothing to see here. Just other curiosity being hyped up.
In this case we need to distinguish between language and accent. The case at the start of the thread involves someone speaking the same language as before but with a different accent.

Possible examples of speaking a different, foreign language may or may not be a related topic, it might be something completely unrelated, certainly worth discussing but probably best not to put too many topics in the same bucket.

From a neurology perspective people suddenly speaking with a different accent for a short time in the recovery phase after a neurological incident may be intriguing. It’s definitely a brain phenomena looking at the evidence.

My wife who has a masters degree in linguistics has actually come across studies that show how after neurological damage, aphasia affects only the victim's native language and not their ability to speak languages they haven't learned.  I am looking for this online and if I find it, I will start another thread.  It isn't entirely off topic - there are relationships between the two subjects but maybe the OP want's to focus only on the accents in this thread.  Either way, you are wrong here as evidence clearly exists.

I recall mishlove discussing xenoglossy as he refered to it on new thinking allowed a while back as a real phenomenon. It might have been with Braude. I will see if I can find it.

The Ron Scolastico case that I witnessed myself wasn't a new language - it was a new accent and a thick one at that. Scolastico wasn't Irish and had never grown up with Irish speakers. This was a true anomaly.
