According to these preliminary reports, for the first time an unequivocally alien technosignature (in the form of clearly artificial radio spectrum transmissions) has been detected by elements of the SETI program. If it is finally formally announced, confirmed and scientific papers written about it, etc., it will presumably be widely accepted that we are in fact not alone in the Universe as an intelligent technological species, and at least furnish one tentatively valid value in the Drake equation. Most importantly, this discovery will have a certain at least moderate impact on our society (if it pans out under scientific scrutiny).
Again, if it scientifically pans out, this discovery could possibly have very drastic, groundbreaking effects on our civilization in particular if the signals are deciphered. For instance they could be discovered to contain immense amounts of new knowledge from a much older more advanced alien race of beings. This has some sort of possibility not zero, and could have massive unpredictable consequences. But of course, it's best not to put the cart before the horse, and wait for confirmation. Or they could be found to be a warning of some kind.
As for societal impacts there could also be significant impacts on some religious institutions.

Quote:Professor Simon Holland, who has been involved in creating documentaries for NASA-funded projects including one that identifies asteroids posing a threat to Earth, reveals that two competing groups of astronomers are vying to be the first to publish confirmed evidence of an alien civilization..
Speaking to The Mirror, he said: "We have found a non-human extraterrestrial intelligence in our galaxy, and people don't know about it."
Simon elaborates that he received this information from a source within Mark Zuckerbeg's Breakthrough Listen, a privately funded initiative with the goal of discovering evidence of life beyond Earth.
He believes that this groundbreaking news could be announced within the next month, coinciding with the US election. He asserts that astronomers working on the Oxford-based project have identified undeniable evidence of transmissions originating from another world, reports the Mirror.

Simon warns that they are in danger of being outpaced to the finish line. He revealed: "This is breaking news, as of yesterday, but the Chinese might be pipping them to the post...."

Five potential techno signature candidates were identified from a re-examination of SETI's "Seti at Home" screensaver programme, which used the combined resources of the world's PCs to sift through the vast amounts of data generated by radio telescopes. BLC-1, according to Simon, is considered the most promising by a long shot.

Regardless of what the source of BLC-1's signals turns out to be, Simon emphasizes, it's unlike any known natural phenomenon. "It's a single-point source," he says, and it's not just noise.
"The signal, instead of being the giant buzz of everything in the universe that we hear through all radio telescopes, was a narrow electromagnetic spectrum."
The initial observations were made at the Parkes radio telescope in Australia

Simon reckons the announcement could come potentially from either Breakthrough Listen in Oxford or the Chinese team possibly within the upcoming month or so.
