The science of coincidences

7 Replies, 1558 Views

I came across a recent podcast with Dean Radin and my attention got drawn to the fact that the host, Dr. Bernard Beitman, was a psychiatrist, in private practice but is currently visiting at the U of Virginia.

I looked him up and he's done some research on coincidences/synchronicity.

Quote:BERNARD BEITMAN, MD is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to systematize the study of coincidences. He developed the first valid scale to measure coincidence sensitivity, and has written several coincidence articles for Psychiatric Annals.

He says previous researchers usually lump together (into "synchronicity" most often) what are actually three types of coincidences. Here's an interview he gave himself about the topic.

There are more parts available on YT.

Here's Beitman's podcast site (where you might have listened to the Radin interview):

Yeah I’ve been listening to the Ed Kelly one, talking about neuroimaging of psi subjects and researching gifted subjects and how Mind and brains interact. I see a lot of the interviewees are related back to synchronicity in some way.

It's an interesting subject - Beitman seems open-minded in his discussion around these ideas. Also, the fact that he is a psychiatrist aiming to help people as opposed to someone doing pure research counts as a plus point for me.

Listening to the second segment, "How can coincidences be helpful?" I liked the example he gave of how the baby learns about the world, and that we may be doing the same. But then went and spoiled the effect somewhat by quoting the example of dark matter/dark energy which I feel hasn't yet become a clear success rather than a clear failure.  That aside, the conversation gave some food for thought, and I've still got more episodes to look forward to listening to.

Thanks for the link Ian. I wasn't sure whether Rob McConnell continued to post Youtube versions of his podcasts, and I'd forgotten his name. Now I know the podcasts are still available on Youtube.

The SPR's review of Roger Nelson's German book on the Global Consciousness Project also mentions a book by Laurence Browne, published last year, entitled "The Many Faces of Coincidence":

It gets two (out of two) rave reviews on Amazon.

Courtesy of this blog post, I see that Browne was interviewed on one of Beitman's podcasts:

On YouTube there is a 40-minute talk by Browne about synchronicity, which was given at an Australian Institute of Parapsychological Research mini-conference in 2016:

I found particularly interesting the story of the rabbi trying to phone the doctor at home, getting one digit of the number wrong, and thereby catching him instead at the house he happened to be visiting (whose number differed from his home number by that one digit).
