Science and Sanity with Rolf Sattler

Quote:Rolf Sattler is emeritus professor of biology at McGill University in Montrael, Canada. He is author of Organogenesis of Flowers, Biophilosophy: Analytic and Holistic Perspectives, and Science and Beyond: Toward Greater Sanity Through Science, Philosophy, Art, and Spirituality.

Here he describes many ways in which we fail to appreciate the limits of science. He notes that science is always changing and, therefore, it cannot "prove" anything. Drawing upon the General Semantics of Alfred Korzybski, he notes that language is always imperfect and is never equal to that which it endeavors to describe. He adds that culture is out of balance; and he emphasizes the yin yang philosophy of balance.
'Historically, we may regard materialism as a system of dogma set up to combat orthodox dogma...Accordingly we find that, as ancient orthodoxies disintegrate, materialism more and more gives way to scepticism.'

- Bertrand Russell
