Dr. Tallis: Consciousness cannot be reduced to brain activity

Quote:Professor Tallis—a philosopher, poet, novelist, cultural critic, retired medical physician and clinical neuroscientist—discusses the relationship between mind and brain, as well as the big questions about the nature of reality.
'Historically, we may regard materialism as a system of dogma set up to combat orthodox dogma...Accordingly we find that, as ancient orthodoxies disintegrate, materialism more and more gives way to scepticism.'

Thanks for finding that, Sci,

I enjoyed that discussion, but it would be nice to have a written transcript because it was way too much to take in at one exposure.

I think he was wrong to suggest there is a symmetry between physicalism's problems with consciousness and Idealism's problems with physical matter. I think it is far easier to imagine consciousness 'simulating' the physical reality than to explain how consciousness arises in a Idealist universe.
