What do you think about Taoism.

I'd never heard of (Guru) Rupert Spira until Stan stuck him up last year. I don't personally care for advaita Vedanta but leaving that aside, I thought his talk was pretentious bullshit. Saying no is extremely liberating. Many people can't do it and their lives are made a misery by it, agreeing to all sorts of things they don't really want to do.

I'll give you an (extreme) example of that. I knew an attractive young woman in the neighbourhood (many years ago) who simply could not say no to blokes that wanted to screw her (sorry to be crude but I'm trying to demonstrate a point). She was an intelligent, kind hearted individual who for some reason, wasn't able to take control of her self. In effect she handed over control (of herself) to anybody and everybody that wanted to take advantage of her and it was painful to see. Many of us tried to help her but she was too messed up psychologically. She'd lost her bearings.

Surely, Spira is not condoning such a method of getting through life ? If he is, he's a fool.

No. The fact that I oppose collective spirituality does not mean that I think we are gods.

I’m quite sure that he’s not condoning it, in fact, he says so in the video.

I wish he’d allow questions like yours to be asked and answered, I would really like to see what he says to a situation like the one you describe. He does allow two way conversations, many of his videos are basically him doing exactly that, with someone asking him a question, and him answering it.

Yeah, I get the pretentious bit, but is it all bullshit? I’m not so sure. He’s been on the ball on a couple of occasions as far as I’m concerned.

Title Number : ON173500
Address of Property : 11 Park Town, Oxford (OX2 6SN)
Price Stated : £2,275,000
Registered Owner(s) : RUPERT ANDREW HARCOURT SPIRA of 11 Park Town, Oxford OX2 6SN.
Lender(s) : Virgin Money PLC

The price stated to have been paid on 18 September 2017 was £2,275,000.

RUPERT ANDREW HARCOURT SPIRA.

Doesn’t that name alone suggest that he probably comes from a well to do family that made their money before he came along.

I’m not convinced that he’s a Jesus like character, but unless you can provide evidence that he was born to a working class family and changed his name to something pretentious from something like Albert Smith I don’t think this proves very much. If he is a conman, he’s doing very well at it. His clients are hardly working class folk and have money to burn, I would suggest.

Maybe he’s doing well precisely because he practises what he preaches? Millionaires don’t bother me, it’s billionaires that do. There I go again! Saying no!!!  Big Grin

All I did was a little digging... you can see almost 1m in cash in his latest annual company accounts, it's become regular and substantial. He doesn't come across as a Jesus figure, from the stories we are told about Jesus he preached to the crowd, at no charge... Rupert can charge £1700 per person for a weeks retreat... lol... and you get to hear him for a few minutes over lunchtime, and a few minutes in the evening.

Why do you think that? I’m from a working class background, my grandfathers occupations were a Gardner and a stone mason respectively.

He may be ripping people off in both of our opinions, but what I’m saying is that ,for me, some of his teachings are of good value.

Thanks, Stan. He's basically the same age as you and me and he used to be a potter. Have you any idea what qualifies him to
enlighten us about everything from human nature to the mysteries of the Divine ?

If you take a look at the prices for his seminar retreats, he's got to be making a jolly good living out it, even if he doesn't instruct hospitality to "utilise a catering sausage" (as I once heard some prat owner of a bed and breakfast explain)

Should he not be at least charging the bare minimum to accommodate the faithful ? The sermon on the mount was free and I think he could teach Swami Spira a thing or two.

Sorry, Max. Honestly, I hadn't read your post and I've practically duplicated it Smile

Still, haven't we deviated a long way from Lao Tsu?

(and to what purpose was the catering sausage to be utilised - a replacement for a missing bath plug perhaps?)
