Yes it is a legitimate criticism. I'm tempted to give him the benefit of a doubt in the sense that he just introduced it that way and IMO probably doesn't mean to "embellish" the story, but you're right it would be better if it was stated more clearly and accurately.

You see that's where one of the problems is. I disagree. He caught flu at work, well don't we all. He could have caught flu going to the supermarket after work or the ball game in the evening.

He specifically says "I had a near death experience when I was on duty". But he didn't. His NDE sounds more enticing because of that and that's why he shouldn't have said it that way. 

I don't want to fall out about this, Ian, nor do I want to browbeat others into accepting my concern. But it is a legitimate criticism (IMO) and if I had been involved in that editing, I would have changed it.

I think it would be best if NDE's used a narrow definition to frustrate the skeptics, who will pounce on any quibble, but have another category such as NDE-like (NDE-l) experiences. I wonder if delirium often comes into this category. NDE-l experiences would not supply proof, but they are still interesting once you accept that NDE experiences are real.

Actually there is a far broader topic here. The NDERF website (The NDE Research Foundation) has given rise to another website, OBERF. The latter is the Out-of-Body Experience Research foundation.
That site uses a whole plethora of abbreviations or categorisations:

In practice there will be lots of overlap between categories and some experiences will fit into more than one group.

I find myself interested in all of these, though I'm not familiar with them all. There is such a lot to find out about human experience and such a lot that I don't know.

To return to the title of this thread, "This is not reality" and the videos shared, personally I don't mind which category the experiences are placed in. What matters to me is that we get to hear about them.

This sounds like something I've heard from other people too, maybe as a baffling statement on a deathbed that "this is all an illusion" or something similar.

I've thought about it in a few ways. One of them is on waking from a dream. Sometimes I have very pleasant dreams and would like to have remained within it for longer. But occasionally I might have a nightmarish dream from which I am only too glad to wake up. But in any case, we do distinguish between waking and sleeping states and tend to feel that this waking part is the more real. Presumably when NDEers describe the contrast they feel it is exactly equivalent, that in shifting to another more real level, this present life is considered as more like a dream. If waking from a dream is something we can comprehend, then by extension, waking from this life might also be something we can grasp.

One thing though what I find interesting is that I feel whatever I experience in the dream "is all I know" and I take it as real and for granted that this is it, there is a small part of me that knows I'm only asleep and dreaming, and are safe and can wake up anytime.

What if it's the same in waking life.....
