Is Skeptiko forum website suspended?!!

12 Replies, 1373 Views

Today I tried to reach the Skeptiko forum... and what I saw was that:

http://www.skeptiko-forum.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Am I the only one who arrive at the suspension message if trying to enter the Skeptiko forum? Or are there anybody else?

Please answer!

It's not just you, Vortex. I'm getting the same message. Probably it's just a temporary issue, such as forgetting to pay the bill on time. I expect it will be back up soon enough.

https://skeptiko.com/ is still up and running. It's just the forum that is down.

P.S. I really appreciated that long post you submitted in the Skeptiko Coronavirus thread explaining your principles re what you believe/accept and why. Had been meaning to message you privately about it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I just ran into it. Hope it's not censorship, like everywhere else these days.

Thanks for reply, Laird. Will be waiting for your private message until you are ready - no need to hurry.

Yes, I also hope it is a technical issue. Yet, knowing how quickly is the Web censorship intensifying nowadays, I, unfortunately, won't be certain of that. Skeptiko forum and its participants have commited more than enough thoughtcrimes to be targeted by the Thought Police: "conspiracy theories", "pseudoscience", "science denial", "radicalism", "populism"...

Hopefully, you've saved a copy of it in case this block turns out to be permanent - even though I doubt that it will - because right now I don't have access to your original post. But it deserves engagement.

I suppose so. But then, wouldn't the skeptiko.com site itself fall victim too? I suppose I still have faith in some (relative) reasonableness in the world.

Pretty sure it's a temporary problem, I accessed the forum earlier this morning with no problems.

Also, the main site is still up: at https://skeptiko.com/

Incidentally, I enjoyed the recent interview with Scottish psychical researcher Tricia Robertson, worth a listen:

Actually, I did saved it - I do so with all lenghty texts I write, in the case something will go wrong with the website on that they were posted.

If Skeptiko's problems are - contrary to my best hopes - are due to censorship, I can re-post this text here. Or just send it you with a private message here on Psience Quest.

I'm not so faithful - one of the features of the modern Web censorhip is its incoherent und unpredictable selectivity. Several people can commit the same thoughtcrime online, and then some of them will be suspended immediately, and others left alone, only to be suddenly suspended some time later... or long time later... or maybe never... but you'll never know, it can happen with anyone who ever commited at least a single minor thoughtcrime, at any time.

I cynically suspect it is a deliberate tactic - an arbitrary and unpredictable repression can have much more impact on public mind.

Good plan. I think it would be worth keeping it public. But I share your best hopes.

OK, but we have not yet gone so far that the legal system is redundant, have we? A take-down of the Skeptiko forums could still, ultimately, be challenged in the US courts, right? And I doubt that there is any legitimate legal case against it. How about you?
Skeptiko is back! Big Grin

So it must have been something technical, after all.
