Jeffrey Mishlove and Callum Cooper touch on the situation in this "New Thinking Allowed" interview about Alex Tanous. Cooper would like to get access on the notes about Tanous made by Karlis Osis held by the ASPR. He encourages any listeners who find themselves in New York to visit (or try to visit) the ASPR library and to give him feedback on their experiences.

From the papers, the organisations income and substantial assets were simply taken... and it happened 30 odd years ago... those who took it are still feasting on it, as well as on the few remaining rich old members... shows you just how dumb the majority of the board were at the time... to allow this to happen... all paranormal researchers...
Yes, I read it. Seems a shame, is all I meant.

I wouldn't think being a paranormal researcher is relevant to being dumb on business. If scientists in any given field can be idiots on history, philosophy, art, or basic social skills, then this or any board can have their pooch thoroughly screwed by lack of business sense and bad luck.

Academics are notorious for being terrible businessmen, it comes with the terrain (notwithstanding topic of inquiry).

Not just academics. Nikola Tesla, subject of a book entitled "The Man Who Invented the Twentieth Century" was disastrously poor as a businessman.
Courtesy of the SPR Facebook page - if I understand correctly, it has just emerged that the Society mortgaged its headquarters for a loan of $12.9m in July, a few weeks after it was reportedly offering them for sale for nearly $18m:

Courtesy of the SPR Facebook page - there's a petition to the New York Charities Bureau calling on them to take action over the state of affairs at the ASPR. Please sign it to try to get some action taken:

(Perhaps users of Skeptiko would also like to sign it if someone can post the details there.)
