I would find such a position entirely reasonable, if there was no persuasive evidence to the contrary.  I'm also not entirely convinced that these 'demagogues' (Coyne doesn't belong) really believe what they profess to.

I would too, but not the certainty of such a position.  Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Fair comment.  Nihilism has it attractions but I suspect it may soon be a pointless old hobby, like smoking. Things do seem to be changing and the views espoused by Malf, Steve, Linda and Paul are becoming less fashionable, simply because of the evidence.

From a materialists view, I suppose the meaning in life is simply the fact that s/he experiences meaning and wants to experience more, at least while s/he waits for he grim reaper.

"It reminds me of a few months ago when a dear friend of mine was in the hospital after a cardiac arrest, and his wife was staying with him day and night in the hospital. Their church friends said they were praying for him. Since I don't pray, all I could do was walk and feed their dog, drop off meals, and pick up friends and family from the airport. It would have been easier were I able to be a Christian."

Linda

Maybe their church friends also did that, but didn't broadcast it.
