I'm not sure whether it helps to know that another user (I won't name that user for privacy reasons) deleted a post on page 3? Perhaps it was deleted at just such a time as to confuse you?

No, it wasn't that. When there were 31 posts the final post wasn't displaying.

Incidentally, when I'm logged in I can see all the deleted posts - deleted by me and others.

Ah, interesting. Good for folks to know: if you want your deleted post to be invisible, choose the "delete permanently" option rather than the "soft delete" option.

Edit: oh, there doesn't actually appear to be such an option. I guess folks just need to be careful about what they post. Chris, can you see the contents of deleted posts, or just that a post was deleted?

I didn't try that when I was having the problem, and the problem went away when the number of posts went up. I would guess it's a glitch with the php script rather than a caching problem, but I can't test that unless it comes back again.

I think this issue reported on Github is describing the same or a similar problem. There doesn't seem to be a solution yet.

Actually a possible workaround is to simply change the settings so that registered forum users don't see the "This post has been deleted" message. I'll try to do that and we can see whether the problem is at least mitigated in the future.

Yes, that sounds like it. From the description, it seems it only occurs if normal users and guests can see deletion notices. Is there any real advantage to being able to see deletion notices (apart from reassurance that one is not going mad when a post disappears)?

Sorry if it means I've screwed up that thread by posting and deleting test messages.

Don't worry about breaking anything. Yes, I don't think there's really any great benefit in seeing the "deleted post" message. I've switched that setting off. Maybe you could check to see how that thread looks now.
