Religion's (apparent) denial of emotional influence

Now, let me say I haven't made a thread in awhile, and this is a very spontaneous one. Very, very spontaneous. You see, I'm a working musician and one of my more consistent gigs is one playing a contemporary church on weekends. And I love the community feel, and they aren't very "fire and brimstone". In fact, they are one step away from being New Age! It's a interesting place. 

However, I guess they still have some kind of dogma still stuck on them. Because the recent "sermon series" has been about basically ignoring what your gut is saying and "trusting totally in God". And I've been thinking the same thing for the last two weeks having overheard these lectures (I usually go outside during it, but this time I caught it to see what was the center theme). This is my response: 

How did you come to the decision to throw yourself in a total faith free fall to God? Because you felt like it was right. 

Am I the only one who sees this "trying to have your cake and eat it to" quandary? And trust me, I see a lot of good in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the New Testament. It is hard to miss when you've been raised in a Protestant household, and a very spiritual family overall. But I just feel like I'm going crazy here, because that seems to be a big hole in it.

Can you elaborate a little on that, Desperado, especially on what "trusting totally in God" means in practice to these lecturers? I ask because, sometimes, "trusting in God" is said in practice to mean "listening to that quiet inner voice", and I am not sure how different this is to "trusting in your gut" in the first place. But maybe the idea is more to trust that "everything will work out in the end if you put your faith in God" even when your stomach is churning and all you can think of is a negative outcome?

For my part, I wondered whether it meant "follow the scriptures to the letter, especially the translation and interpretation which we are telling you".

Fair enough, that could be it - though I wonder whether that might be more likely to be expressed as "trusting totally in God's Word"?
