'Historically, we may regard materialism as a system of dogma set up to combat orthodox dogma...Accordingly we find that, as ancient orthodoxies disintegrate, materialism more and more gives way to scepticism.'
- Bertrand Russell
Thought I'd post a spoiler-free review here of the first movie in question given that it was allegedly inspired by NDEs and it has finally been released.
I do definitely think Soul was somewhat inspired by NDEs, or at least the stereotyped accounts. There are references or allusions made to astral projection, the light tunnel, the life review, benevolent higher powers/guides seen in NDEs, being told it's 'not your time' as well as spirit guides. The film does not focus very much on the afterlife specifically. It's nevertheless a very deep and philosophical film for kids/families at least, focusing on topics such as the 'meaning of life' in a respectful and emotional way.
