Otolaryngology is a medical specialty which is focused on the ears, nose, and throat. It is also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery because specialists are trained in both medicine and surgery.

However, one of the most striking things about near-death experiences is their long-term effect. They frequently bring about a profound shift of values and perspective, which itself leads to major lifestyle changes.

So if NDEs can’t be explained in neurological terms, how can they be explained? Perhaps to a large extent, they can’t be explained. But as I point out in my new book Spiritual Science, they certainly point towards a different vision of the world in which consciousness isn’t directly produced by the brain, but is in some sense fundamental and universal.

I emailed this guy, Typoz  many months ago wondering how he was able to get away with such 'heresy.' He told me that he is not a mainstream psychologist but a transpersonal psychologist (currently). I don't know when that particular discipline emerged... 

I recently bought the book which is well written but unfortunately was riddled with spelling mistakes which are obviously not his fault. I emailed him to warn him about the problem but no response. Never mind.

An odd but seemingly genuine report (NDE ? OBE? both?) from an Argentinian born doctor. At 2.25, he mentions he wasn't in the bed with his wife that he could see (in the bed) from above and outside the house. Does he mean that his real essential self (consciousness) wasn't in the bed ? Or he couldn't see his body in the bed ? To note here also is this often reported ability to be able to see through walls/ceilings etc.

Connecting up with the theme above (NDE caused by a head injury/coma). This study from China found the incidence of NDE to be lower than that reported in survivors of cardiac arrest.

"Infrequent near death experiences in severe brain injury survivors - A quantitative and qualitative study"

Our present study was aimed at collecting this valuable information from survivors of severe head injury after a prolonged coma. The study was conducted in the head injury department of Guangdong 999 Brain hospital, Guangzhou, China.

Only three patients had clearly recognisable NDE narratives. One of them had a negative NDE and interestingly reveals that he thought he was being 'punished for his wrongs.'  We obviously can't draw that conclusion, though.  

Individual differences in opinions about death

The second subject who had the 3-D light experience on the other hand opined that death is the end of material life: "You know, the more I think of it, it makes me think that death actually takes everything away from you and gives you a whole new identity.
It's like….you don't die exactly. But you do die in terms of materialism. Your body dies….your sense of having body dies…your all materialistic possessions die….You actually die… and then, there is a completely new you. I don't know if it's after-life…or just a big vacuum up there. But there is for sure, I….I….just can't explain it."
