It is likely that childhood trauma causes an increased incidence of mediumship (as well as disease):

Quote:In addition, self-identified mediums report a higher incidence of childhood trauma than do non-medium populations of similar ages and genders. Because of the established relationship between childhood trauma and adult physical disease and our research finding that a single mediumship reading did not cause any changes in various hematological and psychophysiological factors in participants, we have concluded that the increased incidence of disease in mediums is related to the increased incidence of childhood trauma. Thus, we have concluded that it is not mediumship that causes an increase in disease but trauma that causes both disease and mediumship.

One example is as an after-effect of a Near Death Experience, where occasionally a person afterwards may have new abilities, for example as an artist or musician, which they did not have before, and one such ability may be the rather unwanted ability to perceive or hear some of those who have passed, perhaps particularly those who 'demand' to be heard. This isn't necessarily a wonderful gift, it may present challenges, such as being able to 'switch off' or draw boundaries in order to have this take place only during set times.

I did actually write "latent attributes" - that could apply similarly to an ability which emerged after a traumatic event perhaps comparatively late in life.  We can't readily know if the trauma was somehow 'unlocked' by the experience or was 'delivered' during or after the event.

I agree that the emergence of mediumship or even just psychic awareness may not be totally a blessing but that's sometimes the case when such attributes are evident without any trauma.  I have personally known sensitives who did not have any control of their awareness and 'met' others online, a common problem being swamped by their awareness and/or unable to 'switch off'.

That resulted in some being at the beck-and-call of demanding discarnates who plagued their lives, sometimes exacerbated by the fascination of the individual for their new-found ability.  Some rejected the offer of help with how to close it down or were reluctant in case they lost it.
