I didn't mean after-effects at all, that was simply an example of how I might use the word 'effect'.
In the original context, I was referring to what effect our actions have on others, or on ourselves. For example, a harsh word to a stranger might cause that person later in the day to kick a dog, the dog may later bite someone ... and so on. Or if we treat a stranger with kindness, that person may later decide to choose fruitful path, rather than one of destruction. Who knows what may happen? But our actions affect the world, and it may not be until a life-review that we find out.
