Help with editor saved drafts

I just spent several hours typing up a PM with over a dozen links and other advice. I originally opened the PM from "editor saved drafts" and I typed the post in the box which showed up for editing (I had started the post a few days ago, and my initial attempt showed up in the "editor saved drafts" list). I hit the "save" button when I was done, which closed the box. But when I reopen the post from the list of "editor saved drafts" none of the edits are present, not even what was present on the initial draft.

I can redo the post once I get over my disappointment that all that work went down the tube, but is there perhaps any way to recover the draft?

We may have to wait for Laird to see if he can help you, Linda.

The only info I see using a quick Google search is to go to your User CP and click the saved drafts option near the bottom left. But I don't know if that's a separate thing. Maybe do your own sleuthing in the meanwhile googling "recovering editor saved drafts myBB" or something to that effect.
I do any and all long posts in notepad and them copy them into the editor when complete.  Sorry to hear what happened to you Linda, in part because its happened to me WAY too many times leading to my aforementioned workaround.
Ian's right that there are - confusingly - two "separate things". I suspect that that's what's caused your draft to seem to go MIA, Linda.

Here's a screenshot with the two separate "draft" features highlighted:

I gather that you're expecting to find your saved message under "Editor Saved Drafts", which I've circled in red. However, that's basically just for "autosaves" which an editor-related plugin that Pollux installed generates.

When you deliberately click the "Save as Draft" button, your draft instead gets saved into the "Drafts" PM folder, which I've highlighted in green. Hopefully, you can find it in there.

If not, we can work something out. Last resort is we pull it up from a database backup, which will be at most 24 hours old.

Thanks Laird. I did look under drafts. I doubt there is a chance that much would have been picked up on a database back-up.

It won't take long to redo the post. Part of that time was spent gathering information (and a bit of "ooh, shiny" distraction), which I now will have at my fingertips.

OK. Sorry that you have to redo your efforts, Linda. Thinking back, malf has reported PMs going MIA too - he thought he'd sent me one or two which never arrived in my inbox. I checked the database and could find no trace of them, neither in my PM folders nor his. There's probably an obscure bug in the MyBB private messaging system that occasionally causes PMs to seemingly randomly just disappear. Best, then, to take Silence's advice, I think.

LOL. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't know to do that already. I learned a long time ago not to bring it up after the fact - it doesn't help the situation at all, and it pisses people (e.g. my kids) off.
