Since he and Omni have talked off-forum over Skype or the like, he presumably knows that Omni's not a sock-puppet and that Omni really does suffer from the crippling anxiety that he says he does. Knowing that, your treatment of Omni would seem cruel and worth calling out. I don't think it's controversial to say that if Omni is for real, then your treatment of him has been less than stellar. Is that fair?

Nope, not fair at all. My suspicions were and are warranted, I can't guess who's doing what off this forum.

And frankly, I'm the only person here who gave Omni a real solution to his problem. [Which is not to disrespect the time and effort Tim made due to the generosity of his heart.]

Hmm? How can it not be fair to suggest that we treat anxious people kindly, or at least not treat them cruelly? I mean, are you saying that if a person with genuine crippling anxiety joins a forum, it's reasonable to castigate him for "crying" and "excuse-making", and to mock him for being "insecure"?

And is mere "suspicion" enough to overturn the notion of treating the anxious kindly? What exactly is this suspicion based upon, and in what does it consist? We know that Omni has a history on Reddit before this forum; we know that Darren has a history on YouTube before this forum, including to-the-camera pieces. Is it reasonable to assume that this is all one person who is generating a plausible back-story so as to troll our forum? I thought you were skeptical of conspiracy theories; here you seem to be promoting one of your own.

His first posts were calling me a subhuman monster who hasn't suffered enough, then the bizarre nonsense about people sending him spam.

That he couldn't handle some mild criticism from Mediochre makes him someone who can't take what he dishes out.

Then his switch from posts supporting the filter/transmission idea to threads about rat memory and LSD that - as he put it - showed Physicalism to be true.

His "higher" standards apparently involve reaching out to "arch atheists" who trash proponents, [guys like Aaron Ra who make podcasts chuckling] with people like the Churchlands about how Chalmers is deluded.

Dude's a clout chaser, my guess [is] he wanted us to do the hard work of refuting varied Physicalist points that he could then use for his own media presence. [That or he's a pseudo-skeptic playing at being a proponent.]

Alex, for all the differences I had with him, put a lot of work into building a place for proponents of different stripes to gather and share perspectives and build connections. [No matter what you knew where he stood, which was against the pseudo-skeptics.] Not even a comparison in my book.

Yeah I was unaware of any of that, my first interaction was on his intro thread thing where you started attacking him and I was confused. I mean if I had seen any of that it would've probably changed my view, but I didn't so yeah.

No big. You and I have had our differences but it's all just internet shit at the end of the day. Thumbs Up

I am doing my best to get better at that.

I never said Darren wasn't a real person after he verified himself on Twitter? I'm simply looking at his actions on this board and noting how bizarre they were. It's like he flips a coin and decides whether to be a skeptic or proponent.

As for Omni's Reddit history, nothing stops a pseudo-skeptic from taking a successful act there and trying it here.

What form of anxiety makes someone claim a pseudo-skeptic has expertise in neuroscience...the evidence for which is possibly taking some biology classes or having a psychology degree but never getting a job in the field? That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Heck, if it was such a ridiculous conspiracy theory I doubt you'd have liked Nbtruthman's accusation against Omni here.

And if Omni is telling the truth? Go back to the post where I quote Taejun Park, the reply to the man who says there's nothing he can do to overcome his circumstances. To which the interlocutor replies "I overcame." Why do you think I put that line in there? Because while my existential concerns were somewhat different, our cell blocks weren't so far away.

So again, I'm among the first persons here who has given Omni an actual way out of his prison, where he can wake up confident that beyond this life lies a new adventure. What you and Darren are offering is, at best, an upgraded meal plan for his cell block.

"All that challenges you is not your enemy. The firm hand strikes, but it can also hold you at the cliff. The soft hand comforts, but you will slip through its grasp. Comfort of body. Comfort of mind. This is the path of defeat. This is the banishment of your own power.

Lay your body on stone so you can love the embrace of hay. Let adversity teach you. The hands of the forger must be firm and relentless, for the most important moment of the sword is the moment of tempering. This is tamashii o ireru. This is when the soul is put into the blade. What you choose will forge you.

And no sword can be forged twice."

Sci, I don't want to get into the weeds with you on this. I'd rather look at the forest, and, honestly, in this situation, I'm seeing a side of you that I would rather not have seen. I'll simply offer these thoughts: perhaps consider how you would act if you were wrong about Omni; if he really is a young man struggling with crippling anxiety and obsessive tendencies and seeking our support, and perhaps consider whether your responses so far have been consistent with that possibility. I also encourage you to remember our board's #1 rule: respect. Like most forums, we're asking that people try to be respectful of one another (or pretend to be!), even in the case of violent disagreement with another member's views. Heated debate is welcome, but not personal attacks.
