A Qualitative Investigation of United States Mediums’ Impressions of Spirits and the Afterlife

The results of this investigation reveal general consensus among the mediums inter-viewed regarding their views of the spirits and the afterlife. Not surprisingly, the mediums agreed that human beings have spirits that exist in a non-physical reality after the death of the physical body. They agreed that this non-physical reality is timeless and omnipresent, and that it is organized ac-cording to principles related to spiritual evolution. The mediums generally agreed in their descriptions of discarnates’ roles and messages, the nature of the death experience, and the principle of reincarnation. They also agreed that a variety of other spiritual entities, such as angels, guides, and ghosts, exist in non-physical reality in addition to discarnates. Some of these themes confirmed findings from other sources regarding the nature of spirit communication (Walliss 2001), energetic nature of spirits (Williams, Evans & Skinner 2003), and phenomenological experience of spirit guides (Roxburgh & Roe 2013). However, the mediums also disagreed regarding some aspects of the spirits and the afterlife. In particular, they had differing views regarding the availability of discarnates and reincarnation, the nature of angels, and the variety of spiritual entities that exist.
