Hmmm... good luck trying to explain the extreme strangeness of DMT!
The experiences many people have reported from DMT seems to go way beyond anything a brain is capable of producing. What DMT does to the brain... to the mind... well, who knows! However it works, it certainly allows the mind to have so ridiculously powerful "hallucinations", so powerful that the external world is tuned out of existence for a while, replaced by an entirely different sensory reality.
DMT is not like LSD or Psilocybin, where the user remains in contact with physical consensus reality to some degree, merely warped by their mind state. No... DMT 99% of the time does away with any sensing of the physical realm! Even more curiously, the deeper part of the tryp is most often not remembered on an ego-level! It is remembered that something inexplicable happened, but the ego cannot understand or know about it, because it is beyond knowledge by the ego. It is... Self that has the experience, because of ego death. It is the only explanation that makes sense to me. It's not mystical ego death, but rather, a DMT ego death.
My use of Ayahuasca certainly suggests that it's not just brain-based hallucinations, especially in the cases of telepathy with seemingly other entities who are there, very much independent of my personal perceptions overlaid onto them.
