Part of the resistance to belief in spontaneous human combustion is that most people lack an intuitive grasp of probabilities. For example, it is vastly more probable that victims of spontaneous combustion were drenched with gasoline and ignited due to a random quantum fluctuation than it is that pure chance can explain why our universe is so finely tuned to support life. Yet many people are much more willing to believe the universe arose by chance than they are that spontaneous human combustion is possible.
