Not sure which thread this belongs in so I'll post it in both. Mods can delete one if necessary. I originally posted in the "What Governments should be doing" thread.

I was unfortunate enough to book my bucket-list trip to the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne this year, only to arrive just as the concerns about the virus spread were getting very serious, so I was one of those thousands left standing at the Albert Park GP entrance only to be told that the event had been cancelled. By the time I was back in my hotel I learned that my return to NZ a couple of days later would be subject to the new self-isolation rules (especially since I am in a high risk category due to age and pre-existing health issues).

My travel agent phoned to tell me that she could get me on a flight out of Melbourne in time to beat the self-isolation deadline (at a considerable extra cost) but that the seats were being grabbed quickly. I decided against that anyway and I'm so glad I did. Those deadline-beating flights were crammed and my flight after the deadline was almost empty (no problem with social distancing - the nearest occupied seat was about three rows away).

Since then I've been in continuous isolation which is somewhat hard on those who, like me, live alone anyway. Under normal circumstances, I look forward to my games of bowls or visits to my family for social contact so even these must now be denied. However, it is all worth it because, as seems clear, NZ is doing a good job in keeping down the case count and, as I write this, we have only one death. Thankfully I don't have a job to worry about but the government here have put money into the pockets of those in most financial difficulty. I think that, being English born and raised and only recently resident in New Zealand, my decision to emigrate here was probably one of the best I've ever made.
I do not make any clear distinction between mind and God. God is what mind becomes when it has passed beyond the scale of our comprehension.
