The Holoinformational Model of Consciousness: An Extension of Pribram's Monism

This paper addresses a quantum-informational holographic model of consciousness based on the holonomic neural networks of Karl Pribram, in the holographic quantum theory developed by David Bohm, and in the non-locality property of the quantum field described by Umezawa. We consider this model an interconnection between brain and mind by means of quantum microsites named dendrons and psychons, as proposed by Sir John Eccles. A dynamic concept of consciousness is assumed as a holoinformational flux interconnecting the holonomic informational quantum brain dynamics, with the quantum informational holographic nature of the universe. This self-organizing flux is generated by the holographic mode of treatment of neuronal information and can be optimized through altered states of consciousness that underlie the coherence of cerebral waves. In brain mapping studies performed during the occurrence of these harmonic states the spectral array of brain waves is highly synchronized and perfectly ordered like a unique harmonic wave, as if all frequencies of all neurons from all cerebral centers play the same symphony. This highly coherent brain state generates the non-local holographic distributed informational cortical field of consciousness that interconnect the entire human brain with the quantum-holographic universe. The comprehension of this holonomic quantum informational nature of brain-mind-universe interconnectedness allows us to solve the old mind-matter Cartesian hard problem in a more transdisciplinary and integrated paradigm.

A universe plenum of non-local quantum potential information with meaning (active information) is an intelligent universe functioning like a mind , as Sir James Jeans already had observed. So, as consciousness has always been present in all nature’s levels of organization, matter, life and consciousness cannot be considered as separated entities, capable of being analyzed under a fragmentary Cartesian-Newtonian framework. Actually, consciousness must be considered a fundamental property of the universe like information, energy, matter, and space-time and must be seen as an irreducible quantum non-local information distributed in a holistic cosmic way, generating self-organization, complexity, intelligence and evolution. Such view of a holoinformational intelligent “continuum”, a fundamental generating order with a quantum-holographic informational creative flow permeating the whole cosmos, permits to understand the basic nature of the universe as an intelligent self-organizing unbroken wholeness. A kind of universal extended consciousness unfolding in an infinite holoarchy. As a quantum-holographic system this universal consciousness is distributed in every part of the cosmosphere, and in our quantum-holographic brain-mind. As part of this universal holographically distributed system our mind-body contains the active information of the whole indivisible cosmos [Di Biase, 21,22]

In my conjecture the interconnectedness between brain and cosmos is an instantaneous holistic nonlocal quantum holographic extended connection and I proposed the concept of a holoinformational flux, from which both mind and matter are in-formed. The quantum holographic brain dynamic pattern is conceived as an active part of the universal quantum-holographic informational field, and capable of generating an informational interconnection that as I have already stated is simultaneously nonlocal quantum-holistic (mind-universe extended holographic connection), and local Newtonian-mechanistic (brain-mind neural networks connections), i.e., holoinformational. This self-organizing flux is generated by the holographic mode of treatment of neuronal information and can be optimized through altered states of consciousness and the relaxation response, that underlie the coherence of cerebral waves. In brain mapping studies I regularly do in meditating patients I see during the occurrence of these harmonic states, the spectral array of brain waves highly synchronized and perfectly ordered like a unique harmonic wave, as if all frequencies of all neurons from all cerebral centers play the same symphony. It is this highly coherent brain state that optimizes the non-local holographic distributed informational neuronal cortical field that generates the state of consciousness interconnecting the human mind to the universe.

The significance of Bohm’s assertion— that we can participate in the noumenon —cannot be underestimated. It invites the consideration that humankind is capable (at least in certain discrete states of consciousness) of being able to access the very source of reality beyond the veil of appearances (Tart, 1975, 1986). If this claim could be proven it would have a profound influence on transpersonal theory. But this paper’s focus is not a thorough examination of transpersonal theory and how Bohm’s views influence it. Rather, this paper’s purpose is to help clarify how Bohm’s views have been misunderstood, misused, and distorted. It is tempting to want to leap ahead and begin to theorize and contemplate the relevance that Bohm’s unifying vision of cosmos and consciousness—the implicate order—has had and will have on transpersonal psychology. However, before attempting this, the more immediate task of clarifying some essential points about his theory must be first undertaken.
