Tehnical iMac and Facetime question

I don't know if anyone here can help me with this.

For some reason, my Facetime is fine on my iphone, but on my iMac there's a lag that makes conversations difficult and unnatural. When I Google this stuff, the usual answer is "there's a problem with your internet connection" (i.e. slow). But they both use the same Wi-Fi, so that doesn't seem to be it.

I was wondering if it's the camera on my iMac, but using Zoom works perfectly. I'm kind of stumped.

If a firewall on my iMac is causing the problem, shouldn't it also affect Zoom and Skype?

Also, just when I turn on the Facetime app on my iMac, without starting a conversation with anyone, when I talk or move in front of the camera, the lag is already there. Again, I'm stumped.
