Please: No Spoilers

I just noticed a new thread about the World Cup which I dare not read in case it contains spoilers. I live in New Zealand, I don't have live TV nor do I have access to international channels such as the BBC. So I have to wait - sometimes 12 hours or more - before I get to see a match as I will later today when I visit my son who has recorded the England match.

Today I will spend those intervening hours hoping the game isn't spoiled for me by someone posting something online where I don't expect it. This little haven is the very last place I expected to see posts about the World Cup so my plea is simple: please, NO SPOILERS.

PS - the same goes for another sporting passion of mine - the Formula One Grand Prix.

I know it is a selfish request but the online world brings many blessings like availability of sporting events to watch anywhere, anytime but also the curse of spoilers in the multi-headed Hydra that is Social Media. I also avoid turning on the radio but I've had results announced in the most unexpected places like a supermarket that plays local music radio with syndicated news bulletins.

Also, the smallest hint can (literally) give the game away. Once I forgot myself and turned on a radio which - sod's law - was at that very moment broadcasting an update on a Grand Prix race I was waiting to watch when the free-to-air replay was available. I think I caught two words of the report but that was enough to give me huge clues as to what was happening and who was leading late into the race. In short - spoiled.

Then there are those evil psychopaths who delight in showing they know something others don't by making it their business to spoil movie plots while you are watching in the cinema.  

I often think that one of the few things I'll miss about this earthly life is sport. I can't imagine how sport would be possible in the afterlife where minds are open books and linear time either works differently or not at all.

Perfectly understandable - I edited the first post in the World Cup thread to ask people not to refer to a game that's been played for 24 hours. But best not to check into it at all!

Sometimes I have similar thoughts about the afterlife, but involving Earth movies and music. But then maybe my "personality" will be so different I simply won't care! Who knows.

Beware you don't become an earthbound spirit "addicted" to Earth sports!

That's a real danger, I know. However, as you say, the personality grows out of such earthly things. Like when I was younger and thought that life without sex would be tantamount to hell but now that I'm older and living such a life already, it doesn't seem so important. (That's not to say that sex is not possible in the afterlife - from what I've read, people continue to enjoy that particularly earthly pleasure.)
