"Monster" dogs

Couple of "paranormal" news items in the past weeks that make you go "What the hell is that"? Both of them involve dog-like creatures.

The first one is footage of a dog getting attacked by a bigger creature, most likely a wolf of some kind, but still very odd-looking. It's so huge... What do you think it is?

From Coast to Coast:

Quote:A bizarre piece of footage that appeared online this week shows a monstrous-looking creature of some kind lunging at a man's dog. The video was purportedly recorded back in 2015, but only popped up on YouTube yesterday. Little is known about the nature of the footage, only that it was allegedly shot somewhere in the United States. Who filmed the video and where, specifically, it took place remain a mystery.

Despite the lack of clarity surrounding the origin of the footage, what is shows is pretty remarkable. In the video, a dog can be heard barking in the background as the camera focuses on a dark mass among some trees. Suddenly, the anomaly springs up from the ground and is revealed to be an enormous animal. And, making matters all the more unsettling, the creature is headed straight for the dog that disturbed it.

Then, a couple of weeks back, Montana wardens reported a wolf-like creature killed that they sent to a DNA lab to investigate because it looked so unlike a wolf.
Possibly a wolf/large-dog hybrid, but strange.

And by the way, dire wolves are extinct.

Interesting, Ian after looking at the slow motion part of the video I think it might be a wild boar. As to the second animal (from just the picture) at first I thought it was a half starved bear until I saw the foot. However, that would have been very quickly established if that had been the case so I don't know.

The wild board guess makes potential sense regarding the shape, but the animal looks so huge to me, almost like a horse.

I've looked at it again and I'm personally pretty satisfied that it is a wild boar, Ian but of course I might be wrong. Boars can literally be huge depending on where they come from (not that I'd know that, I just looked it up Wink

That might be it, Tim, as that story is from Alabama, and this is somewhere in the US.

My first thought when I saw those pictures was: can dogs (or wolves) mate with bears?

Apparently not. But then there have been strange cases, such as this Russian "bear dog":

Supposedly?
Well it says PhD in genetics so I'm taking it for granted that that's true.
Regarding the video footage, this article sets the record straight:

The original video was found and it's actually a very large wolf, in Saskatchewan, Canada. Fortunately the dog survived.
