In the news (UFO and UFO-related)

I thought we could do with a thread for miscellaneous news reports on UFO-related phenomena aside from our dedicated Text Resources and Multimedia Resources threads, so, here it is, seeded with an article that's been sitting in my "to share to PQ" tab for a while now:

Unexplained lights in the sky sparks UAP chatter across much of Western Australia

Quote:A string of sightings of strange lights in the sky has sparked community chatter across Western Australia's Midwest, with no clear explanation yet for the phenomena.

Father and son Shane and Bradley Plane were driving near Point Moore in Geraldton, 420 kilometres north of Perth, when they spotted three or four lights in the sky.
Quote:Perth Observatory said it had received multiple reports of lights across a widespread area around the same time and as far inland as the northern Goldfields.
Quote:Mid West Ports Authority harbour master Heathcliff Pimento believed the cause was atmospheric refraction — a known phenomenon that can make ship or fishing boat lights appear to hover, drift, or vanish.
Quote:But Matt Woods is not convinced by the explanation.

"It would have to be a very large refraction for the whole Midwest to see it," he said.

In 1952, DC’s skies were littered with US fighter jets chasing UFOs. More than 70 years later, the mystery persists

Quote:The night was dark and thick in front of him, leaving Patterson with little more than the faint glow of his instruments and the silhouette of the horizon.

Then, suddenly, he saw them.

Four bright lights appeared, 10 miles ahead and slightly above him.

But they didn’t blink or drift like normal aircraft lights. They waited.

He told the controllers what he saw and went full throttle ahead. His interceptor accelerated to nearly 600 miles per hour.

Controllers watched the blips on radar respond in real time, maneuvering through the sky in a way no known aircraft could: They rapidly reversed, hovered, made sharp 90 degree turns and sped in and out of sight at incredible speed.

It's interesting to see mainstream news outlets publishing this sort of thing these days.
