Hayley Stevens on the Mackenzie Poltergeist in Edinburgh

Hayley Stevens looks at the story of the poltergeist claimed to be associated with Sir George Mackenzie's mausoleum in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Ediburgh. She finds inconsistencies in the stories told by tour guides, perhaps unsurprisingly:

Although she couldn't find any evidence for the story that the poltergeist was "awakened" when a man broke into the mausoleum and fell into a secret burial chamber in 1998, she does recount the shocking incident in 2003 when a teenage boy broke in and beheaded a mummified corpse with his penknife. (Online sources say the corpse was not known to be Mackenzie's, as there were four in the mausoleum.)
