The Daily Grail has an article about the potential effects of a coronal mass ejection from the Sun - the end of modern civilisation and hundreds of millions of deaths, if what happened in 1859 (the "Carrington Event") were repeated:

I was curious to see what the "What are you worried about" thread on Skeptiko was about.
My reaction to reading it was that a coronal mass ejection is still near the top of my list. There's no point trying to work out whether it's likely to happen, because it's bound to happen sooner or later.
