For the layperson that visits...

Don't worry, most of us don't understand any of these giant words they throw around here on this forum. You aren't alone.
That is the first clue. If you have to google every other word, likely not at home or comfortable.

Google those words, that helps. Yet it makes reading and comprehension here difficult. Don't worry, you aren't alone. It just isn't designed for normal people.

It is best to just avoid conversations until you see who is who. Even then, watch out. The slant here is very strange. Likely something we don't want any part of.

Since you can't even delete your own profile, the best you can hope for is to be banned. Welcome to the machine.

Hope that helps. Good luck and God speed to you.

Giant words? You mean the words used by science and / or philosophy?

Do you realize that many of the words are essentially shorthand for big concepts and ideas that would be otherwise be redundant to lay out and out again? It's rather important in academic science and philosophy, and even just philosophy in general. Serious philosophers need to do this, otherwise, their books could be horrifyingly thick tomes that would weigh far too much to carry.

Hegel is rather famous or infamous for this, depending on what one thinks of Hegel ~ he defines many, many complex ideas, and then only generally uses the shorthand he creates for them thereafter. And if you can't keep the shorthand in your mind, it's easy to get left behind, as Hegel respected the intelligence of his readers. Hegel had no room to simplify anything, because at some point, simplification merely becomes dumbing-down necessarily complex, complicated ideas ~ irreducibly complex ideas.

"Normal people"... what are you trying to suggest here...?

Philosophy is a necessarily complex, so of course comprehension will not come immediately without first doing some research.

I see philosophy get ragged on enough in some circles for being "needlessly wordy". Yet, those circles do not comprehend that it's philosophical lingo, shorthand, in the same sense that science has its lingo and shorthand.

It makes communication of complex ideas in science and philosophy feasible. Vast concepts can be explained in much shorter, digestible timeframes therefore.

Define "very strange", please... also, please don't profile needlessly... let people decide for themselves, without telling them what to think about the forum.

It's only "very strange" if you are unfamiliar with the research of parapsychology.

Not sure what you're trying to say here, apart from trying to disparage science and philosophy in general...

This kind of thing can be used to attack anything that sounds remotely complex or complicated.

A nice way to avoid the complexities of reality, and the studies some deep thinkers put into researching that complexity.

You had the opportunity to observe this public board for as long as you liked before joining. If you thought that you wouldn't be at home or comfortable because of the big words we use or because its design is not for normal people, or if you didn't like who was who, then you could have simply moved on - but you didn't: you chose to join.

On the other hand, we had no similar opportunity: we accepted your registration with no questions asked, knowing nothing about you other than your username, email address, and IP.

Oh? What do you see as our slant, and what do you think is very strange about it?

Who are you including in that plural?

Having your profile deleted is as simple as shooting an admin a polite request to do as much. We have done it in the past, on more than one occasion. We will do it for you if you're sure that you want it done.

Just a general FYI: Durward confirmed via email that he did want his profile deleted, and so I've deleted it.

A very odd duck that Durward fellow.  I quite liked a lot of what he had to say.  He could have really loved it here.  But man the poor guy has an extreme hypersensitivity to perceived slights.  I mean we're not even rough and tumble as far as the internet goes.

A thought that strikes me about this statement. (I hope this sentence was itself understandable).

Obviously, this is a huge exaggeration (and Durward himself showed he could read non-simplistic stuff like Ian Stevenson).

But let's say this was true. Why would that be awful? The idea maybe that there's potentially value in there being something to learn, that God forbid you'd have to do something equivalent to opening a dictionary.

When did being "comfortable" (with ignorance? with one's limited knowledge?) become the goal? Is this the "dumbing down of America"?

Ain't that the truth. There's another forum which I heard of a long, long time ago called something like Gladiator-ko. I'm too chicken to go on there, though.
