Co-creation Hypothesis

I thought this Daily Grail article was quite interesting. It describes how Guillermo del Toro and Terence McKenna saw UFOs which seemed to them like badly designed fakes. The article interprets this in terms of the Co-creation Hypothesis, proposed by Greg Bishop, in which the perceptions of witnesses of paranormal events are shaped by their cultural expectations:

I think it was Lyall Watson in his book Supernature who wrote about one of the events at one of the big Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites.  I wish I could remember the details, but everybody who saw something, described it differently.  It seems they all saw a ball of light but the virgin Mary only appeared in a few of the accounts.  It's an interesting subject.

Perhaps the incident at Fatima in 1917, when a large percentage of a crowd of around 70,000 people allegedly witnessed the sun dancing around in the sky? That and other religious manifestations are discussed in Mike Dash's book "Borderlands". He also discusses something that sounds a bit like the Co-creation hypothesis, but he calls it the Cultural Source Hypothesis, and says it dates back to the 1960s.

That is the event - you have jogged my memory.  I haven't read Mike Dash's book so I feel sure I would have read about it either from Lyall Watson, or R.A.Wilson.

Jacque Vallee has drawn parallels between the UFO phenomena and the airship phenomena of the late 1800's, the flying boat phenomena of the medievel ages (along with fairies and trolls).  These other beings were said to abduct persons, and leave them with amnesia and confusion.  Is the modern day UFO phenomenon just a continuation of what we have been experiencing for hundreds and thousands of years now?

Here's the wee Mc. on aliens and his sighting..... (warning, the video may make you  queasy Smile)

Given the specific environmental conditions under which our senses/cognition have developed,  I'd automatically assume that something from far outside our status-quo would present itself through perceptual weirdness.

The late John Mack is also great for expanding thinking on the topic of UFOs:
