| That helps clarify the point. I agree that an objective description cannot replace the phenomenal fact it is meant to explain. But if “consciousness is fundamental” is compatible with every possible result, then it is functioning as an ontological stance rather than a discriminating empirical hypothesis. That need not make it meaningless; it changes what evidence can establish. More specific models built on that stance can still make different commitments. A filter or transmission model, a dual-aspect account and a physicalist realisation account may all accept neural dependence, but they need not predict the same recoverable information, causal structure or relationship between damage and experience. I also agree with the qualification about hardware: fundamental consciousness would not automatically imply that local minds exist independently of organised systems. So my question was less “what observation disproves the metaphysics altogether?” than “what observation distinguishes this implementation from a physicalist realisation account?” If there is no such difference even in principle, the remaining disagreement may be metaphysical underdetermination rather than a scientific result. | ||
