It might also depend on the depth of the NDE (as opposed maybe to a quick OBE). But there have been innumerable cases of "materialist" scientist and atheists (or religious fundamentalists) getting their "minds blown". 
Ego and attachment often take a blow, so it would seem the caring for the career would take a blow too.
