McCorristine, "Spectral Arctic: A History of Ghosts and Dreams in Polar Exploration"

I followed a link from the Daily Grail to a short article on attempts by clairvoyants to locate Franklin's Arctic expedition in the 1840s, which refers to a book published this year by Shane McCorristine, entitled "The Spectral Arctic: A History of Ghosts and Dreams in Polar Exploration". Following another link, I was surprised to find that the whole book (326 pages) is freely available online, as it was published by UCL Press (University College London), "the first fully Open Access University Press in the UK".

"The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly-lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition."
