Hi all!
So, I've found this interview (link below) with a well know Dr. in Italy, Enrico facco. He is a specialist and university professor in anesthesiology, but also has a specialization in neurology. What makes him stand out among other, higly qualified MDs such as him is his knowledge of philosophy and history, that resembles that of somebody holding a PhD. in humanistic studies!
He recently wrote a book, in 2018, titled "the enigma of consciousness" or "l'enigma della coscienza" in italian. in this book, he takes a look closely at the relationship between mind and brain, even looking at his years long studies in the field of NDEs. While not clearly an afterlife proponent, he surely isn't a staunch materialist since he has the dignity to admit that, right now, we know really little about how consciousness works or even where does it come from.
He says that modern sciences, starting from about the 16th century, had a big problem into investigating it since during Galilean times the inquisition and church stated that only they, the church authorities, could talk about similar topics. In this case, consciousness or the soul became only a field of theology. This started some kind of war between scientists and theologicians, making scientist refuse a priori some of those ideas since they had been mistreated on them. He even hints at non local consciousness in the book, although he is careful to not come to hasty conclusions, yet the book is co edited by a physicist so there are also some quantum ideas about how it might work.
I find Dr. Facco to be an extremely reliable person, and a top class surgeon. Becoming a university teacher in italy requires an outstanding CV, years of work in the field and many peer-reviewed publications before being even able to apply for the position. I find that he could be an authority in this field on par of Sam Parnia or Van Lommel.
I suggest using automatic translation to understand a bit of the talk, although it's not going to be extremely accurate.
