Could octopuses be extraterrestrials?

Here's a Daily Grail article discussing a paper by Chandra Wickramasinghe and others, which considers evidence for the old proposal of Hoyle and Wickramasinghe that evolution on earth has been influenced by extraterrestrial organisms - not only viruses and bacteria, but also "more complex eukaryotic cells, fertilised ova and seeds". In particular they suggest the possibility that octopuses arrived on earth as frozen eggs. Others are unconvinced.

I must admit that I've always had a soft spot for the ideas of Hoyle and Wickramasinghe, probably originating in my reading science fiction by Fred and later Geoffrey Hoyle. That's not to say I'm supporting their views, but find them interesting to consider.
