Speculations on the possible mechanism of reincarnation.

For a long time I was interested in how the process of reincarnation actually works, how karma is passed on from life to life and most importantly, if some aspect of the personality we developed in life is retained from one existence to the next. From what I read, there are two viewpoints relating to this. The first is the New Age information coming mainly from past life regression sessions where the soul is given lessons as part of its soul contract in order to evolve to its fullest potential. Here the element of free will is important, since a soul can refuse to reincarnate and pursue its evolution on other levels. The other opinion shared by Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Yoga Samkhya states that we are bound to the wheel of death and rebirth due to desire, kamma(pleasure) or tanha(thirst for sensory experience) which form our psychic dispositions or predilections, called samskara or vasanas in Sanskrit, towards certain acts, deeds and behaviors that are passed on from life to life. Here, the goal is getting off the wheel entirely, moksha, nirvana, liberation. There is little room for free will here, especially when you have heavy karma attached, which gives it a rather mechanistic flavor. Here are some resources on the different ways reincarnation is viewed.

A third. One that addresses the actual mechanics of the physical reality experience you call reincarnation.

Everything exists Now.
