What I meant was that I suspect there is a good reason why the soul is so hard to detect (at least by appearance). I think some people might be tempted to bale out before their time but I don't know, maybe they wouldn't.

I know I'm going to regret asking but I'm curious Wink  how do you know ? (a machine that can see consciousness has already happened in some alien civilisation ? ). Call me a tad "backward" but it's somewhat beyond my boggle factor.

You don't want suggestions.  You've been given plenty of those already.  You want certainty accompanied by the official stamp of approval from the status quo.  Too bad certainty is an illusion

I don't think discussions would get very far if the answer to Everything was - "it's just an illusion". We have to live within the bounds of that illusion, self-created though they may be. I'm not going to test the illusion by jumping off a cliff or thrusting my flesh into a fire. The illusion is real enough while we are immersed in it.

It's like Donald Hoffman says: we can't take what we perceive literally, but that doesn't have to mean that we can't take it seriously. Whatever a speeding train literally is, it surely can seriously damage us if we step in front of it.

Why would you regret asking? Does the potential answer scare you? Tongue

Well, 'A Tad Backward' if you were introduced to [the teachings of] beings, off Earth or not, which included information about how to go about deriving the greatest possible experience from this physiological construct we call 'reality', and you tested that incredibly important information and found it was not only simple but it works, would you begin to trust that source?

ET beings have demonstrated that they can travel instantaneously anywhere at anytime for any reason. One factor in this accomplishment is their 'construction' of sentient, conscious craft (ships). Depending upon the species or faction thereof, there may or may not be 'technology' involved such as 'machines that see consciousness' or better yet, are conscious.

The reason this is beyond your boggle factor is one of three.

1) You have shut off that fact that everything is possible if you can imagine it.
2) The idea has no resonance with you and you cannot be what you are not the vibration of...first.
3) #1 and #2

No, but the statements you are making are extraordinarily bizarre not only for their "content" but the "authority" with which you state them. I'm sure you realise this is going to limit (to say the least) discussion on a science forum, even one that allows for Psi.

However, as I said, it takes all sorts to make an interesting forum.

Let's try this again.

I wondered what you meant, Obiwan and then it dawned on me. You mean seeing into the future ? What I was getting at was
is it conceivable that there might one day be a machine/device that can detect "consciousness?"
