Is it time to throw away the Standard Model?

Quote:1st August 2021

Physics is in chaos. The recent claimed discovery of a new force of nature is undermining our entire scientific understanding of how the universe works. And the Standard Model that physicists have been working on for the last fifty years and that has helped us formulate our best ideas of the big bang, dark energy and dark matter – not to mention predicting the Higgs Boson - might be about to fall apart.

Will scientists figure out how to understand the world anew, and more deeply than ever before? Or can we find a way to absorb these new experimental results into our existing paradigm? Is this the step we needed to finally arrive at a theory of everything?

The Panel

World-renowned physicist Paul Davies, simulations manager for the Muon 2-g experiment Renee Fatemi and groundbreaking astronomer Chris Impey debate stepping into the unknown. Philip Ball hosts.
'Historically, we may regard materialism as a system of dogma set up to combat orthodox dogma...Accordingly we find that, as ancient orthodoxies disintegrate, materialism more and more gives way to scepticism.'

- Bertrand Russell
