Interesting discussion on the very small, touching on QM and implications for consciousness. The experts are very honest on the mysteries therein. Highly recommended.

I did think I'd find this interesting (I'd already listened to it before this thread). Somehow it didn't quite do a lot for me. But that may be as much to do with the style of the presentation or how closely I was (or was not) paying attention.

Quote:"Electric charges - somehow know about each other"

"Has anyone ever seen a gluon?"  "No."

There is a deep belief that there must be a "real" particle and that particles have a mysterious ability that comes from some inner nature.

Would you be surprised - I think these confused.  I am not a mysterian, but embrace multi-level reductionism.  Electrons don't know anything - they are obeying laws of information, external to their materiality.

Gluons are NOT empirical - they are quasi-empirical.  They are an assumption from probability outcomes, just as are the anticipation of futures states in information science.  Gluons and electron behavior are better described as structured information.

I usually listen whilst doing other mundane tasks, but this did require full attention. Did you listen live or on the podcast? The ‘podcast extra time’ provided some of the most interesting exchanges (IMO).

The other problem is that Melvyn does tend to gallop through things. Obviously, this is due to him trying to fit as much info into the broadcast show.

It's a strange thing, there is a morning broadcast of about 45 minutes. It is repeated in the evening but is only 30 minutes. Time dilation or something Wink Originally I listened live to the evening broadcast, but have downloaded the MP3 for later listening. The trouble is, I sometimes download half-a-dozen episodes and never find the time to get back to all of them. Smile
