Bryan Williams has written an article about warnings perceived as auditory phenomena from deceased loved ones. The article contains two intriguing firsthand accounts, one submitted to Louisa Rhine, the other to her daughter, Sally Rhine Feather. It also raises the possibility that auditory warnings might simply be precognitive impressions manifested in a sensory form.

An Auditory Phantom Harbinger?

Quote:While they are typically thought of as being seen, there are times in which apparitions have reportedly been heard, as well: Reports of phantom voices, footsteps, and other sounds mimicking human activity do tend to surface on an occasional basis, mostly in haunt cases but also in other kinds of spontaneous spectral encounters. And indeed, surveys tend to indicate that auditory experiences are the next most frequently reported form of spontaneous apparitional encounter, behind visual sightings.

For instance, in surveying a collection of around 850 reports, British psychical researchers Celia Green and Charles McCreery found that around 37% of the encounters were auditory in nature. [1] In a more recent survey of 449 reports, Icelandic researcher Erlendur Haraldsson found that 28% of them involved phantom sounds. [2]

One particularly intriguing thing about some of these auditory experiences is that they are said to manifest in form of human voices which seem to convey subtle information or a warning about things to come in the near future. One example comes from the extensive collection of reports of spontaneous psychic experiences gathered by the late parapsychologist Louisa Rhine:

Very interesting, Doug. There's too many of these accounts now for it to be some kind of coincidence or self fulfilling construct/confabulation IMHO. I tend to think we are under observation but I wouldn't have any idea what constitutes the criteria for an intervention (episode) to change the course of events. BTW do you know where Obiwan has gone ?

Obiwan is still around Tim. He just hasn't posted or liked any posts lately. To find out when a user last visited Psience Quest, use this link:

I've often though that in the case of crisis apparitions, maybe the dying person thinks "X should know!" whereupon X psychically picks up the urgency and because his brain knows it's not just imagination, it converts it to an image to convince the reciever that it is real.

Interesting idea. Though it's hard even in ordinary circumstances to understand the relationship between mind and brain. In cases of apparent psychic impressions, to me it seems even harder to place things in the proper relationship - e.g. which part is a function of the brain, and which part is independent of it. Chicken and egg, cart before horse and so on. I don't have answers, only questions.
