I only quoted the first couple of paragraphs which are a set-up for a "but ..." - the rest of the article is opposed to the views in those opening paragraphs. It goes on to say ...

All this reminds me of something that happened to me years ago. I was sitting talking to a friend, we were chatting in very general terms about the state of the world. I commented that, no matter what the problems, it was bound to get better, and I had faith in human nature. My friend responded that he too had looked at human nature and considered it pretty foul, certainly not grounds for hope.

And this is it in a nutshell. We each look at the same thing and draw different conclusions. I'm going to resist the urge to say something 'clever' or try to sound profound.
