Certainly "Mr V" was Soal, according to West and Markwick. But I think what the reader is meant to understand from what I quoted, is that
if he didn't know the truth, he would consider fraud the most likely explanation. It does seem like an odd thing to acknowledge.

Yes. Looking at West's and Markwick's account again, a few years after the initial publication, Soal "came out" as Mr V and wrote about his involvement under his own name.
