It's pretty damn worthless, then, because there's no reasonable way to test this scientifically ahead of the supposed time.

Perhaps. I wonder if you think physicists are just pulling this out of their collective arses? Or have you for a moment considered why they think this will happen? Anyway isn't it fun to consider such speculation?
To be fair, my comment was tongue-in-cheek. I don't object to such theorising, and don't dismiss the original idea. One thing we might all consider though, is how, let's say in the next ten thousand years, our knowledge and theories might change. How our future selves will regard this is also fun to speculate upon.
