Mysterious Universe has an article on Etienne Bottineau, known as "The Wizard of Mauritius" (d. 1802), who claimed to be able to perceive ships approaching the island before they were visible:

I presume it's largely based on Rupert Gould's article on Bottineau in his book "Oddities" (1928), though I can't see a source cited.
